Planning your Zakynthos beach trip
Zakynthos (Zante) has one of the most varied coastlines in the Mediterranean. In a single day you can swim in the electric-blue water of a west-coast cove, walk a 9 km stretch of golden sand in Laganas, and watch endangered loggerhead turtles nest at sunset in Gerakas. This guide covers every beach on the island — we've visited each one personally — so you can pick the right stretch of sand for the day you want.
How to pick the right beach
- Crystal-clear water & snorkelling: head west — Porto Limnionas, Porto Roxa, Korakonisi and Makrys Gialos. Limestone cliffs = intense turquoise visibility.
- Family & facilities: east and south — Tsilivi, Alykes, Alykanas, Banana Beach and Laganas have sun beds, tavernas and shallow entries.
- Peace & solitude: Vathi Lagadi, Kremidi, Climati, Laperda, Dafni, Marathias. Bring water, shade and snacks — no facilities.
- Iconic / once-in-a-lifetime: Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) by boat, the Blue Caves, and Cameo Island at sunset.
- Sea turtles (Caretta caretta): Gerakas, Dafni, Sekania, Kalamaki, Laganas — the protected National Marine Park. Respect marked zones.
Getting around
Most beaches are easiest to reach by car or scooter — distances are short but roads twist through the hills. Boat trips depart daily from Porto Vromi (west) and Agios Nikolaos (north) to reach Navagio, the Blue Caves, White Beach and the hidden west-coast coves.
