Planning your Zakynthos beach trip

Zakynthos (Zante) has one of the most varied coastlines in the Mediterranean. In a single day you can swim in the electric-blue water of a west-coast cove, walk a 9 km stretch of golden sand in Laganas, and watch endangered loggerhead turtles nest at sunset in Gerakas. This guide covers every beach on the island — we've visited each one personally — so you can pick the right stretch of sand for the day you want.

How to pick the right beach

  • Crystal-clear water & snorkelling: head west — Porto Limnionas, Porto Roxa, Korakonisi and Makrys Gialos. Limestone cliffs = intense turquoise visibility.
  • Family & facilities: east and south — Tsilivi, Alykes, Alykanas, Banana Beach and Laganas have sun beds, tavernas and shallow entries.
  • Peace & solitude: Vathi Lagadi, Kremidi, Climati, Laperda, Dafni, Marathias. Bring water, shade and snacks — no facilities.
  • Iconic / once-in-a-lifetime: Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) by boat, the Blue Caves, and Cameo Island at sunset.
  • Sea turtles (Caretta caretta): Gerakas, Dafni, Sekania, Kalamaki, Laganas — the protected National Marine Park. Respect marked zones.

Getting around

Most beaches are easiest to reach by car or scooter — distances are short but roads twist through the hills. Boat trips depart daily from Porto Vromi (west) and Agios Nikolaos (north) to reach Navagio, the Blue Caves, White Beach and the hidden west-coast coves.

Frequently Asked

Zakynthos Beaches — FAQ

Answers to the questions travellers ask most — from locals who live here.

Which is the best beach in Zakynthos?

Navagio (Shipwreck Beach) is the most iconic — a dramatic cove enclosed by 200 m cliffs with a rusted shipwreck on white sand. It's only reachable by boat. For a beach you can drive to, locals love Porto Limnionas (west), Gerakas (south, turtle sanctuary) and Makrys Gialos (north).

Which beaches in Zakynthos are only accessible by boat?

Navagio (Shipwreck) Beach, the Blue Caves, White Beach and several hidden west-coast coves are only reachable by sea. Daily departures run from Porto Vromi (west) and Agios Nikolaos (north).

Which Zakynthos beaches are best for families?

Tsilivi, Alykes, Alykanas and Banana Beach are family favourites — sandy, shallow, calm water, and plenty of facilities including sun beds, tavernas and water sports.

Where can I see sea turtles in Zakynthos?

Gerakas, Dafni, Kalamaki and Laganas beaches form the protected Caretta caretta nesting zone in the south. Access is restricted in marked zones, with no sun beds and no lights after sunset, enforced by the National Marine Park of Zakynthos.

Do Zakynthos beaches have umbrellas and sun beds?

Organised beaches — Tsilivi, Alykes, Laganas, Banana and Kalamaki — offer full facilities (umbrellas, sun beds, food, parking). Hidden coves like Kremidi, Vathi Lagadi and Porto Roxa are natural — bring your own supplies.

What is the water like on Zakynthos beaches?

Zakynthos has some of the clearest water in the Mediterranean — especially on the west coast (Porto Limnionas, Porto Roxa, Korakonisi) where limestone cliffs produce intense turquoise shades. The east coast is typically calm; the exposed west can be choppier on windy days.

When is the best time to visit Zakynthos beaches?

June and September are the sweet spot — warm seas (23–26 °C), long sunny days and smaller crowds than July–August. May and early October are quieter but the water is a little cooler.
